\nWith the technical support of the organization\u2019s academic instructor, individuals developed \u201cDance To The Stars,\u201d a booklet designed by people with various disabilities to educate the public on the fact that they are people first, and they have preferences.<\/p>\n

Booklet Preface<\/strong>
\n\u201cThis book was written by The Arc of Putnam County Employability Skills Summer Training Class.\u00a0 These authors are young adults with various disabilities.\u00a0 These young adults interviewed other young adults with disabilities.\u00a0 The disabilities of these young adults include Impaired Vision, Impaired Hearing, Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Bifida, Down Syndrome, and Autism.<\/p>\n

What happens when a group of young adults with disabilities decide to write a book on their own?\u00a0 My heart begins to open.\u00a0 The feelings flow, the pages begin to fill pictures and form in my mind.\u00a0 This instructor has become the student feeling humble and blessed to be allowed into this \u201cNormal Circle\u201d, where wheelchairs, blindness, autism, C.P., and Spinal Bifida are the majority and that which is considered \u201cNormal\u201d becomes the minority. -Cindy Burgoyne, EST Instructor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Excerpt<\/strong>
\n\u201cWe asked Jeff if he liked for a person to sit or stand when they are talking to him.\u00a0 Jeff requests that you please try to sit or get at eye level with him.\u00a0 Jeff says his neck will hurt if he has to look up to the person talking to him.\u00a0 Jeff says it makes him feel small when people stand over him.<\/p>\n

Jeff also feels left out when someone asks staff or others things concerning him that he could answer himself.<\/p>\n

Jeff is visually impaired but not hearing impaired.\u00a0 You do not need to talk louder when you converse with him…Lots of people tend to do that. \u201cPlease identify yourself to me as I may not know who I am talking to.\u00a0 Before you come up behind me and begin pushing me in my wheelchair PLEASE let me know who you are and where we are going.\u201d\u00a0 Jeff shares that it is very scary when the world starts spinning around you and you do not know who is pushing you or where you are going.\u201d<\/p>\n

Who Benefits? <\/strong>Staff, new staff, the public, and the people who developed the booklet all benefit.
\nHow?<\/strong> Because, it is one thing when \u2018professionals\u2019 are the teachers, but infinitely more meaningful when the information and inspiration comes from the person.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
